Darren Sweetnam signs for Ronan O’Gara’s La Rochelle

Munster winger Darren Sweetnam has signed for Ronan O’Gara’s La Rochelle as a ‘medical joker’ until the end of the season.

The 27 year-old’s contract expires this Summer and hopes to put himself in the shop window with some game-time in the Top 14.

Sweetnam played 92 times for Munster since debuting in 2015 and played a key role in Munster’s memorable 2016/2017 season under Springbok boss Rassie Erasmus. The Corkman has also made three appearances for his country, scoring one try.

Head coach Johann Van Graan expressed his dissapointment at losing a player of Sweetnam’s quality but wished the winger the best of luck in his new adventure.

“Like JJ, we were eager to retain the services of Darren beyond the current campaign, but it hasn’t been feasible.

“He is a hugely talented player who has a chance to play in the premier French competition over the coming months and while we are disappointed to see him leave, we are supportive of the move with the hope of Darren securing future opportunities and success in his career.”
