Date of William O’Connor’s PDC World Darts Championship opener revealed

The Cappamore native was beaten by eventual finalist Michael Smith at last year’s event.

Limerick’s William O’Connor will kick off his World Darts Championship campaign on the second evening of the event after the schedule was released yesterday.

O’Connor is paired with WDF Women’s Number One Beau Greaves as they meet on Friday December 16. They will take to the stage in the second game of the evening, following the clash of Laurence Ilagan and Rowby John Rodriguez.

It will be the third session of the World Championships with defending champion Peter Wright headlining the opening night 24 hours previously.

Two-time champon Adrian Lewis will be in action on the first day session of the event on Friday afternoon.

O’Connor will face a difficult opponent in Greaves as she makes history as the youngest women to appear at the world championships.

The prize for the winner will be a second round meeting with Gabriel Clemens on Wednesday December 21. That game will be played second on the evening session that day.

Last year O’Connor equalled his best ever finish as he reached the third round where he was bested by the eventual finalist Michael Smith. The Limericm man took the first set but the next three went the way of Smith. O’Connor won the fifth but the Englishman sealed the win in the sixth. O’Connor had previously reached the third round in 2019.

The Limerick man is currently 37th in the PDC Order of Merit maintaining that position after breaking into the top 40 after last year’s World Championship run.

Greaves meanwhile is the WDF Women’s World Number One as the 18-year-old prepares for a first tilt on the world championships.
