Downes and Donovan named on GAA.ie Tailteann Cup Team of the Week as Limerick kick off campaign with a win

Next up for Limerick is Carlow this weekend in Netwatch Cullen Park where a win would all but seal their place in the knockout stages.

Limerick duo Cathal Downes and Brian Donovan have been named on the GAA.ie Tailteann Cup team of the week following their goalscoring display in the win over Longford.

The Shannonsiders got their campaign off to the perfect start with a 2-16 to 1-16 win over the Leinster side in the TUS Gaelic Grounds on Saturday evening as the duo hit the net.

Downes had Limerick in front for the first time with his green flag coming in response to Longford kicking the opening two scores of the evening. The Kildimo Pallaskenry man then kicked a fine point to leave Limerick 1-8 to 0-7 ahead at the break.

Donovan came into his own in the second half, firstly netting from the penalty spot before adding a pair of points from play. Those scores would prove crucial down the stretch with Longford getting within two points after scoring a goal of their own.

Next up for Limerick is Carlow this weekend in Newatch Cullen Park where a win would all but seal their place in the knockout stages.
