It is a hectic week at Fairview Rangers for Chairman Derek Whyte, the committee, management and players as they prepare to welcome Airtricity League Premier Division champions Shamrock Rovers to the Fairgreen.
The event has been months in the making and the club will showcase the new floodlights and stand to a larger audience.
Fairview captain AJ O’Connor has played in some big games for the club in recent times and feels Saturday is “as big as a friendly will get.”
However, the centre-midfielder was quick to point out that the day was as much about praising the work of the club’s volunteers as much as the game itself.
“To test ourselves against the best team in the country will be great. Most importantly, the day is about the club and representing the club and the work that they have done throughout the last couple of years. Its great that they are getting the recognition and have the opportunity to get more money to keep them going for the years ahead.”
Manager Jason Purcell echoed O’Connor’s sentiments and feels the club has taken their progress to another level in recent years.
The main aspect is to showcase the ground and all the work that has taken place including the lights and the stand. The pitch has always been fantastic but it has gone to another level now and there are plans for a stand behind the goals and further work on the car park as well so it’s great.”
With Shamrock Rovers in the middle of a pre-season campaign, the hope will be that star players like Jack Byrne, Ronan Finn and Richie Towell will be selected for the game by Stephen Bradley. There is an ex-Limerick FC connection too with Aaron Greene, Rory Gaffney, Barry Cotter and Bradley himself all lining out for the club in the preceding decade.
The game will kick-off at 4.15 at the Fairgreen and promises to be a great spectacle.
