Football Activities to Cease under Level 5 Restrictions

All football related activities will cease immediately in conjunction with new Level 5 restrictions introduced by the Government on Wednesday evening.

Many local junior football clubs had returned to training when the country was re-introduced to level 3 in early December. Teams were permitted to train in pods of 15 with at least one coach present. However, due to the huge surge in cases of late, which resulted in over 1700 new Covid cases yesterday, no football activity will be allowed under the new restrictions.

The news will come as a disappointment for schoolboy and schoolgirl teams who were allowed to train under revised level 5 rules in November even when adult sides were forbidden from doing so.

The new announcements along with the rapid new spread of the disease will put the future of the current amateur football season in severe doubt due to the sheer level of games and competitions left to be decided.

The Government will review the situation on January 31st.
