GAA Moments of the Year | Quaid turns the tide against the Rebels with penalty save

As 2021 draws to a close, Jack Neville looks back on some of the most memorable GAA moments of the year.

While the year proved largely forgettable for most as the pandemic continued to grip the world, for the fans of Limerick GAA, there was a number of incredible moments throughout 2021 that will live long in the memory

And ahead of the new year, look back at some of the most memorable.

Limerick GAA’s Moments of the Year.

Today, Nickie Quaid’s Penalty Save against Patrick Horgan is looked at.

After storming to the All-Ireland title in 2020, there were some concerns after Limerick’s early season form in the league that saw them winless after three games.

John Kiely’s men ended that duck with a comprehensive win over Cork in the Gaelic Grounds with the sides meeting again a month later in the championship.

Showing little effect from the loss on the Ennis Road, Cork started brightly and Shane Kingston’s goal gave them an early lead. And when he was brought down for a penalty with twenty minutes played, Patrick Horgan had the chance to move the Rebels five clear.

But standing in his way was the then All-Star goalkeeper as Nickie Quaid pulled off a wonderful save. From here Limerick grabbed a quickfire brace before the half to move six ahead.

Quaid was at his irresistible best in the All-Ireland semi-final, staving off the Deise threat with a number of top quality saves.

Somehow, a second All-Star escaped him but few in Limerick, if any, are still unaware of his utter importance to the current Limerick machine.

The best at what he does.
