The four day festival of horse racing at Limerick Racecourse got off to a flying start with Hardline the surprising winner ahead of Getabird in the Grade 1 Matchbook Betting Exchange Novice Steeplechase.
The Michael O’Leary owned horse saw off the firm favourite after Getabird and Ruby Walsh made an error at the final hurdle in the course’s first ever Grade 1 race.
First race of the day (12:20 Greenmount Equine Hospital Maiden Hurdle) was won by 2/1 second favourite Band of Outlaws for trainer Joseph O’Brien and was ridden by JJ Slevin. Band of Outlaws saw off Future Proof and race favourite Mixmoon to earn the victory.
Walsh moved on from the disappointment of third place in the first race to win the second onboard 11/8 favourite Salsaretta in the Signplus Hurdle for Willie Mullins. Salsaretta finished ahead of Felix Desjy in second and Killer Miller in third.
The Guinness Maiden Hurdle at 1:25 was up next at Limerick Racecourse and first past the post was Buckie Cullen for trainer Denis Hickey, with Coillte Eile and Lady Writer placing second and third respectively.
Then came the big race of the day that saw Hardline shock Getabird in second, with Riders Onthe Storm finishing third place. The 2:35pm O’Kelly Brohters (Mares) Handicap Hurdle was next up on the card and was won by Moskovite
The 3:10pm Mr Binman Handicap Steeplechase by Seskin Flyer and the final race of the afternoon (3:45pm), Lyons of Limerick (Mares) INH Flat Race was won by Shanches.
