It promises to be an intriguing battle when Limerick and Kilkenny meet in the All-Ireland final this Sunday in Croke Park.
Two of hurling’s greats meet on Sunday as Limerick and Kilkenny meet with All-Ireland honours on the line.
There seems to be little to separate the teams on paper with Limerick seeking a three in a row, hoping to emulate Kilkenny who were the last to do so when they won four-in-a-row in 2009.
Between them, the hold a number of records on a team and individual basis and ahead of Sunday’s final, we look at some of those stats.
All-Time
- Kilkenny stand alone at the top of the roll of honour with the most All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship wins at 36.
- Limerick are fourth in the list on 10. Cork (30) and Tipperary (23) are the only other teams in double digits.
- This will be Kilkenny’s 64th ever All-Ireland final (36-27). That is the most of all-time, ahead of Cork (50), Tipperary (41), Galway (25) and Dublin (19)
- This will be Limerick’s 20th final as they become the sixth team to reach that threshold. They have a record of 10-9, winning three in a row after losing five on the bounce.
- Brian Cody is the winningest manager of all-time. The Kilkenny bainisteoir has won 11 titles as manager coming in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015.
- Cody also has three All-Ireland medals as a player.
- John Kiely can go second in the list of most All-Ireland’s won as a manager should Limerick be successful on Sunday.
- He is currently level on 3 titles with Cyril Farrell, Bertie Troy and Pat Henderson
- Declan Hannon is level at the top of roll of honour as a three-time All-Ireland winning captain alongside Mikey Maher (Tipperary), Dick Walsh (Kilkenny), Christy Ring (Cork). A win on Sunday will put him alone at the top.
- TJ Reid and Richie Hogan have seven All-Ireland medals which puts them joint-15th in most of all time. Henry Shefflin holds the record with 10, ahead of Kilkenny teammates, Tommy Walsh, JJ Delaney, Noel Hickey, Jackie Tyrrell and Noel Skehan.
- Kilkenny’s Eoin Murphy and Conor Fogarty have won four All-Ireland medals apiece.
- 20 of the current Limerick side have won three All-Ireland medals.
- Since the 1950s, Kilkenny have the record for the biggest winning margin in an All-Ireland final, their 3-30 to 1-13 win over Waterford in 2008 (23 points)
- Last year, Limerick broke the record for most points ever scored in an All-Ireland final, hitting 3-32 in the win over Cork, breaking the record the Cats set in ’08.
- TJ Reid currently sits at fourth in the all-time record scorers list on 28-468 (552) from 73 games. He is thirteen points behind former teammate Henry Shefflin while he trails leader Patrick Horgan by 30 points.
- Reid (73) is also second in the all-time appearance list behind Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh (76).
- Nickie Quaid is Limerick’s record appearance holder on 54, one ahead of Graeme Mulcahy and two clear of Declan Hannon.
- Aaron Gillane became Limerick’s all-time record scorer in their win over Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. He has shot 11-193 (226) in 28 games.
- Reid could also become only the seventh player to win All-Ireland medals in three different decades should Kilkenny come out on top. He won All-Ireland’s in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015.
- The Kilkenny man will also become only the fourth player to feature in 12 different All-Ireland finals on Sunday, joining Eoin Larkin and JJ Delaney in that regard. Shefflin holds the record with 15.
- Richie Hogan has appeared in ten finals.
- Reid is currently third in the list of cumulative All-Ireland final top scorers on 2-55 from his 11 appearances. Shefflin tops the pile on 5-81 ahead of Eddie Keher 7-74.
- Aaron Gillane has scored 1-19 (10f) for Limerick in his three final appearances. A tally of 14 points would see him move into the top ten of all time.
2022
- TJ Reid is the second highest scorer in the championship in 2022 with 2-56 from seven games, level with Lee Chin. He needs just two points in the final to overtake Conor Cooney (1-60).
- Aaron Gillane sits in seventh in the scoring this summer on 3-40 from five games.
- Gillane is the top scorer from play in this year’s championship with 3-18.
- Kilkenny’s Adrian Mullen is second on the list with 0-25, level with Galway’s Cathal Mannion.
- In their six contests thus far, Limerick have scored 7-153 at 29 points per game.
- They have conceded 4-135 at 24.5ppg.
- Kilkenny have played seven games this year and scored 17-165 at just under 31 points per game.
- They have conceded 4-133 at 21ppg.
- Limerick are undefeated in this year’s championship heading into the final and if they were to win on Sunday, it would be three years without a loss.
- The last team to go three years undefeated was Kilkenny who didn’t lose a game from the 2005 All-Ireland final to the same game five years later against Tipperary.
- Kilkenny have lost a pair of games this summer, losing to Galway and Wexford in the Leinster round robin before going on to claim the provincial title.
