Treaty United Senior Women’s side showed superb fight as they came back from 0-2 down to rescue a 2-2 draw at Jackman Park on Sunday afternoon. Galway raced into a 0-2 lead through Lyndsey McKey and a penalty from Maebh De Burca. However, Gillian Keenan and Jenna Slattery scored a goal apiece to secure a draw.
In a quiet opening, an enterprising move involving Tara O’Gorman, Gillian Keenan and Aoife Horgan resulted in the latter shooting from range but it was easily dealt with by Hayes-Coen.
On the half hour mark, the visitors manufactured a great chance to take the lead as Shauna Brennan’s cross was met by Shauna Fox but she misdirected it wide of Mitchell’s right hand post.
Jenna Slattery responded with a strike from a 30-yard free kick which caused little trouble to Hayes-Coen once again. Galway were certainly having the better of the exchanges at this point with Brennan orchestrating from full-back and a succession of one-two’s resulted in her teammate Lyndsey McKee forcing a save from Mitchell who also snapped up the ball to prevent a possible rebound.
Stephen Lally’s Galway side opened the scoring in the opening stages of the second period as McKee latched onto a back-post cross before cutting back onto her right foot and slotting beyond Mitchell.
Niall Connolly emptied the bench on the hour mark and within two minutes, the home side had two big opportunities to score with Aoife Cronin’s shot travelling across the box which was rescued by substitute Aine Walsh on the byline as she teed up Olivia Gibson but centre-back Fox cleared the danger.
With twenty minutes remaining, the Galway women doubled their advantage as Aoife Thompson latched onto a mishit shot from Maebh De Burca and was taken down by Mitchell in the box and referee Kevin O’Sullivan pointed to the penalty spot. De Burca stepped up to send Mitchell the wrong way and provide a huge dent to Treaty’s hopes of rescuing at least a point.
Both Slattery and Shannon Parbat had efforts on goal for Treaty as they searched for a route back into the game but in truth the visitors were in control of proceedings. Substitute Abbie Callanan received a cut-back from Nicole McNamara before her deflected shot was clawed away just in the nick of time by Mitchell.
Just as it looked like the game was petering out, Gillian Keenan pounced on hesitancy from Fox at the back and the winger neatly finished to ensure a nervy ending for the visitors. As we entered the final minute of normal time, Connolly’s team rescued a share of the spoils as substitute Clodagh Doherty launched a long ball towards Slattery who beat Hayes-Coen to the ball which then trickled over the line to send the Treaty players into raptures.
