Munster got their Investec Champions Cup campaign back on track with a fantastic bonus point victory away to Toulon on Saturday.
Graham Rowntree’s charges knew they would need to deliver a big performance in the south of France if they were to remain contention, and they now have their fate in their own hands going into the final round of matches.
Munster had to come from 10-0 behind in the opening half but went into the interval with a 17-13 lead, with the game developing into a tough contest.
A Melvin Jaminet penalty and a try from deep by Duncan Paia’ava saw Toulon lead 10-0 after 23 minutes, before Jack Crowley got Munster off the mark with a penalty from 40 metres.
Alex Nankivell went over for Munster’s first try after a patient build-up, with Crowley converting to tie the game 10-10 as the break approached.
Jaminet’s third kick of the afternoon edged Toulon back in front, but Munster finished the half strongly and led 17-13 when Simon Zebo touched down after collecting a neat chip from Crowley, who converted.
After half-time Tom Ahern powered through to score following a lovely chip from Crowley, and Rowntree’s men now had a 22-13 lead.
Calvin Nash secured the try bonus point for Munster, when he ran in to score off the back of a high kick from Craig Casey, and Crowley’s conversion gave the Red Army a famous 29-18 victory.
Munster defended well after that to close out the win, with all eyes now firmly fixed on the arrival of leaders Northampton Saints to Thomond Park next Saturday.
