HIGHLIGHTS | Newcastle West retain Limerick SFC title against Adare

It’s the first time in their history that NCW have won the Senior Football title on back-to-back occasions.

An exhilarating SFC final swung in Newcastle West’s favour as Jimmy Lee’s side ran out 1-11 to 2-5 victors after extra-time against Adare on Sunday.

Mike McMahon was the hero on the day as he kicked 1-3 from play as well as fielding a dangerous Adare delivery into the NCW goalmouth in the dying embers of the contest with NCW going back to back for the first time in history.

NCW opened the scoring with five on the clock through a Diarmuid Kelly point and doubled it just two minutes later with Adare waiting until the 14th minute for their opener from Mark Connolly.

With the scores at 0-3 to 0-1, a long ball into McMahon was punched into the back of the net as NCW established a comfortable five point lead with ten minutes left to be played in the first half.

However, only one point separated the two at the interval as Adare were awarded a penalty that was sweetly converted by Robbie Bourke, adding to a point a few minutes previous to end the first half 1-3 to 1-2 in Newcastle West’s favour.

Willie Griffin levelled the scoring for Adare ten minutes after the restart and was the focal point for Adare’s second goal of the game as he teed up Shane O’Connor to give Adare the lead for the first time.

The game was level again thanks to a couple of Thomas Quilligan frees but Bourke looked to have won it for Adare only for full back Darren O’Doherty to send the game to extra time at 1-7 to 2-4.

Iain Corbett got the scoring underway for his side in extra time with Shane Stack and McMahon adding two more before Adare pulled one back.

But McMahon rounded off the scoring with Adare desperately seeking a goal with the champions holding on to retain.
