HIGHLIGHTS | Rathmore prove too strong for Na Piarsaigh in Munster IFC final

The Limerick IFC champions were unable to stop the Kerry domination of the Munster Intermediate Football Championship.

Rathmore were crowned Munster Intermediate Football champions following their 1-17 to 0-10 victory over Na Piarsaigh in Sunday’s final in Mallow.

An onslaught of points from placed balls in the first half for the Kerry outfit would put them in the driver’s seat with a second-half goal ensuring the victory.

Dylan Cronin got the game underway for Na Piarsaigh with a point after twenty seconds but the scores were levelled again two minutes later through Chrissy Spiers.

Rathmore were three points to the good when the Caherdavin outfit got their next score. Great work from Kieran Daly on the left hand side was finished off with an impressive score to make it 0-4 to 0-2.

And history would repeat itself just eight minutes later as Rathmore had put three between the posts before Na Piarsaigh got another. Mark Ryan, Chrissy Spiers and John Moynihan were all on the scoresheet for the Kerry champions before Kieran Daly could kick his second of the game.

Na Piarsaigh were beginning to dominate for a period of time and had two decent goal efforts denied. Rathmore’s Andrew Moynihan made a stunning goal-line clearance from a Cathal McMullen punch with Na Piarsaigh settling for a point from the attack.

Rathmore missed their own golden opportunity for a goal before the half but managed two more points in additional time to make the score 0-10 to 0-4 at the interval.

Na Piarsaigh began the second half on fire, with a Kieran Daly 45 opening the scoring for the half. Moments later, Daly was agonisingly close to hitting the back of the net, with his fine effort hitting the crossbar and coming back into play.

However, Rathmore began to take control again and after some intricate play outside the Na Piarsaigh box, the ball fell to Darragh Rahilly who finished well to put Rathmore 1-13 to 0-7 ahead and the game to bed.

Both teams went back and forth with points in the latter stages of the contest but Na Piarsaigh were unable to get a foothold and were defeated by ten in the end to draw the curtain on a fantastic season for the Caherdavin side.

Rathmore’s win continued Kerry’s dominance at Intermediate level with an eighth successive Munster win for the Kingdom.

Scorers for Rathmore: Chrissy Spiers (0-12, 10 frees), Darragh Rahilly (1-0), Shane Ryan (0-3, 1 free, 1 65′), Mark Ryan, John Moynihan (0-1 each).

Scorers for Na Piarsaigh: Kieran Daly (0-5, 1 45′), Dylan Cronin (0-3, 2 frees), Cathal McMullen, Tom McKeown (0-1 each)
