It was a historic day for the Airtricity First Division side as they appeared in the last four of the FAI Cup for the first time in their short existence.
It wasn’t to be for Tommy Barrett’s Treaty United who were narrowly defeated 2-1 in the FAI Cup semi-final by Premier Division side Derry City on Sunday.
Treaty were playing in front of a sell-out Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium but it was the home side that got off to the better start when they went 1-0 up after seven minutes. Patrick McEleney worked the ball well in the box before teeing up Jamie McGonigle to fire past Jack Brady in the Treaty United goal.
Just eight minutes later, the Premier side doubled their lead when a fine Cameron McJanet cross was met by Brandon Kavanagh, who headed home with the prospect of a Derry City rout looming.
However, a foul on Jack Lynch in the Derry City box resulted in a penalty for the Limerick side with Enda Curran making no mistake from 12 yards and handing Treaty a lifeline prior to the half time whistle.
Tommy Barrett’s side tightened up defensively but failed to take any of their chances as they bowed out of the competition.
The side can be extremely proud of their performance and received the ovation they deserved from around the ground as they turn their attention to the play-offs.
They face Wexford FC this Friday with the play-offs beginning next week in the Markets Field.
