Irish Women’s 7s team secure the Bronze Medal at the HSBC Tournament in Canada

The Irish Women secured their second successive podium finish in this season’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Ireland overcame France to win the Bronze final 22-14 at this season’s HSBC World Rugby Seven Series.

Munster’s Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe was the one running in all four tries to cap an amazing weekend for the star winger.

After winning silver in Seville, Aiden McNulty’s side followed up with bronze medal success in Langford where they claimed victories over Japan, Brazil, the USA and France.

It’s been a lucrative year for the Irish Women’s 7s set up as they have now recorded a fifth place finish in Malaga, second in Seville and Langford’s third place finish.

They currently sit fifth in the Sevens world rankings but in current form they are making a push for a top three spot.

The Women’s side are now guaranteed Ireland’s highest ever finish for a Women’s World Series campaign. The sides previous best was eighth place in 2018/19.

The latest success will give Ireland confidence going into a busy summer schedule with the start of the Rugby Europe Championship and the standalone Rugby World Cup Sevens qualifying tournament in July.

In Langford, Murphy Crowe once again stood up as the tournament’s top try scorer with 12. One of these includes the last-gasp match winner against the USA, this sent Ireland through to the Cup semi-finals.

The Tipperary native became the first Irish woman to score four tries in a World Series match. Astonishingly she is also the first Irish player, male or female to score more than 10 tries in a World Series tournament.

Murphy Crowe’s best haul for a single World Series event before this was nine, Sydney 2019 and Seville this year. New Zealand’s Portia Woodman holds on tight to the record with an astonishing 14 tries in Atlanta in 2015.

Murphy Crowe this season has racked up 32 tries across five tournaments. She is now on course to finish as the series’ top try scorer for a second time across three seasons.

Her closest rival at the moment is Australia’s Charlotte Caslick on 24, but it will take a serious drop of form for Crowe to let this slip.
