After an extensive rehab period over the last 18 months, the South African is available for selection against the Scarlets this Friday
There will be one name on the lips of all in attendance on Friday night in Musgrave Park as RG Snyman is expected to make his long-awaited return to Munster have a torrid two years with injuries.
The World Cup winner ruptured his ACL just seven minutes into his Munster debut back in 2020 and only lasted for three games on his return the following October, injuring his knee once more.
But after an extensive rehab period over the last 18 months, the South African is available for selection against the Scarlets this Friday with coach Denis Leamy “excited” for his return.
“He’s absolutely available for the weekend. He has come through the last few days well so preparations are going good for Friday night. RG is in good nick and he is up for selection with the 55 other players that we have available to us. It’s exciting to have him around, a World class player and a World Cup winner. He has a lot of knowledge that we can draw on. His experience and examples will be good for us going forward so very exciting to have him back.”

Fineen Wycherley, who has also suffered with his share of injuries this season, praised the attitude of the second rower around the camp and described how Snyman has helped him develop as a player.
“He has added to us as a squad in different ways over the years. Off the pitch, as a second row I’ve learned a lot from him. He is a positive figure, even though he has had a tough time. He has been a great character to have around the building. So it’s fantastic to have him on the pitch, doing what he loves, playing rugby and getting his chance at the weekend hopefully.”

Like Munster, the Scarlets season took a while to take off with the Welsh club languishing near the bottom of the URC table. However, a run of form has seen them win four on the trot in the league and seventh overall. They remain well outside the play-off places but will know bonus point wins from their remaining games could be enough to sneak into the knockouts.
Right now they are eight points behind 8th-placed Connacht and Leamy is aware of the danger they will pose on Friday in their bid for a quarter-final spot with Munster only seven points clear of their interprovincial rival.
“They’ve won seven on the bounce in all competitions, so they have a real habit of winning. They have some exceptional talents so we will have to be on high alert. They have a load of talent and ability so their tendancy to score a lot of points is evident.”
It will be a strange feeling for whoever comes out on the wrong side on Friday given their recent records but for the winner it will be another step in the right direction ahead of the seasons’ conclusion.
