Junior Rugby Round Up

OLD Crescent were the latest to suffer defeat to in-form Young Munster on Saturday when they suffered a 7-54 defeat in Rosbrien in the Energia Community Series Conference 1. Already in the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup semi-final, ‘Munsters’ continue to clock up big scores and this latest victory came on the back of a 43-14 win over UCC the previous week-end. The Greenfields side were 14-0 up after ten minutes thanks to tries from Mark O’Mara and Hugh Worthington, both converted by Evan Cusack. More tries for Young Munster followed with Alan Kennedy, Evan Cusack, Alan Tynan, Aaron Hennessy and another from Hugh Worthington adding to the tally. Evan Cusack kicked the rest of the points. Crescent’s only scores came from a try by Jack O’Mahony and a conversion by Ronan McKenna.

Considering that Young Munster have Ben Betts, Jack Lyons, Conor Philips and Pa Ryan yet to come in, their fans can look forward to some exciting rugby this season. No doubt they “would give it all up for the Munster Cup” but bigger successes could well be on the horizon for the Greenfields boys over the coming months if they can maintain their current form.

UL Bohemian have also been showing good form and they got the better of Dolphin on a 33-25 scoreline. Bohs hit the ground running in this game and scored after just four minutes, Colm Madden getting in for a try which was converted by Harry Byrne. On six minutes Colin Ryan finished off a good move to touch down and once again Byrne found the target with the conversion leaving Bohs leading 14-3. The Limerick side will have been happy with that first half after adding a third try, this time Jamie McNamara scoring and Harry Byrne adding the extras for a 21-6 advantage.

It was a closer game in the second half with Bohs increasing their lead to 28-11 when Colm Madden added a second try, converted again by Byrne, and Darragh O’Gorman got his name on the scoresheet when he dotted down to put his side 33-11 ahead. Dolphin never gave up the challenge and they finished strongly with two converted tries.

Shannon will not have happy memories of their trip south. They lost 61-17 to UCC in the Mardyke. The Students led 26-5 at the break, Shannon’s scores coming from tries by Brian Bennett, Darragh Oxley and Sean McCarthy.

In the games played in the Munster Senior League 2, UL Bohemian had a 41 to 7 victory over Dolphin while Bruff had an exciting 27-25 win in Cashel.

The Conference 1 fixture between Garryowen FC and Cork Constitution did not take place. The fixture was called off on Friday because of a Covid 19 issue.
