Junior soccer back in full swing this weekend

There is plenty of action in the Limerick District League this weekend following a week’s break for St. Patrick’s weekend.

Janesboro FC are in action on Saturday evening when they represent Limerick District League in the Oscar Traynor Trophy against Leinster Senior League The game will take place at Crumlin Astroturf pitch on Saturday (8pm).

The Leinster Senior League side are made up of players from the likes of Crumlin, Booth Road Celtic and Bluebell.

Janesboro will be looking to emulate the Limerick Oscar Traynor Youths team who reached the final of the youths competition following a penalty shoot-out victory over Inishowen last weekend.

It’s a great achievement for the Limerick club team to reach this stage of the competition considering Limerick selections full of top players from different clubs have struggled to reach the latter stages of the Oscar Traynor Trophy in recent seasons.

In the Lawson Cup, the overdue last 16 meeting of Pike Rovers and Prospect Priory takes place at Crosagalla. The original fixture was due to take place two weeks ago but was cancelled due to inclement weather. Last week, due to a bereavement, the game was postponed.

Pike enter the game on a high having defeated Carrick United in the Munster Junior Cup and beating Janesboro to claim the Tuohy Cup last week. Goals from Johnathan Grant and Conor Kavanagh secured Pike’s first trophy of the season.

Pike remain on course to win four trophies including the league, Lawson and Munster Junior Cups. Mick Sheil has a squad full of quality at his disposal but it is also relatively small for a side competing on three fronts. Sheil has insisted that he prefers to have a smaller squad as every player can see an opportunity to play if they apply themselves correctly.

Prospect manager Derek Braddish admits it will be a tough challenge for his side.

Pike can probably afford to take five or six players out for those big games in the league and Munster Junior Cup. They are going for the league and three consecutive titles in the Munster Junior which would be a huge achievement.

On our day, we have a performance in us. We have shown that against Regional, Fairview and Janesboro.

The winners of the tie will take on Ballynanty Rovers in the quarter final.

There are two game in the PJ Matthews Premier League with Fairview hosting Regional at the Fairgreen and Carew Park facing Geraldines. Both games are on Sunday at 11am.

Fairview will be looking to go level on points with their opponents on Sunday as Regional currently lead the Fairgreen outfit by three points in the table.

Regional come into the game off the back of a 7-0 win to Carew Park but the Dooradoyle outfit are in the midst of a battle to overturn their removal from the FAI Junior Cup following Sheriff’s successful objection last week.

It was a bitter blow for the club who reached that stage of the competition for the first time since 2010. Regional have appealed the decision and await on the hearing from the FAI Senior Council.

Jason Purcell’s Fairview side may be hoping to cash in on any ill feeling amongst their opponents squad. However, free-scoring Regional have enjoyed a solid league campaign. League consistency may have been sacrificed as Shane O’Donoghue and Tom O’Connell’s men concentrated on Munster Junior and FAI Junior Cup games.

In what is sure to be a tight contest full of ex Airtricity League players, Regional can all but secure a top four finish with a victory. Fairview are in no immediate danger of losing their grip on fifth place as they are six points clear of Aisling Annacotty.

However, if he remains in charge next season, Purcell will be hoping for further improvement at the club. The signings of Barry Ryan and former league winners Adam Frahill and Jamie Enright were a signal of intent at the beginning of the season. However, in an ultra competitive top half of the table, goals have proven harder to come by for Fairview than any other side in the top half.

Carew Park have already been relegated recently but in truth it was no surprise to many following a season of significant struggle for the southside club. Losing influential manager Albert Slattery at the start of the campaign was a big blow and virtually a whole squad defection followed.

Many lower league players have been drafted in to ensure the club finished out the season. Unlike many before them who prematurely left the stage, Carew appear to have managed that feat with three games left which means they will aim to re-start in Galtee Fuels 1A next season.

Seventh placed Geraldines will be expected to emerge with all three points as they look to bounce back from last weeks 2-0 defeat to Ballynanty. It further proved that Geraldines ‘cup team’ reputation is accurate as they defeated the same opposition in the Munster Junior Cup just three weeks ago.

Geraldines can go level on points with Aisling with a win and could exert pressure on Mike Aherne’e side despite Annacotty having two games in hand.
