Ladies footballers look to take top place in National League

The Limerick ladies footballers welcome Wicklow to Askeaton this Sunday knowing that a win will move them to the top of Division 4 of the Lidl National Football League. This game was due to take place last weekend but was a number of games postponed due to the severity of the weather.

Speaking to John Ryan, manager of the side, ahead of the game, he is in no mood for complacency as his side welcome a strong outfit to Askeaton.

“(On the refixture) We were meant to have training weekend this weekend but unfortunately the pitch was unplayable last week, and the game couldn’t go ahead so now its down for two o clock on Sunday in Askeaton.”

“We have to prepare and we’re hoping that the girls will be ready for it.”

“Wicklow are a good side. Beaten League Finalists last year. They are in the intermediate championship. They will be very hard to beat. They play a running game with three very fast forwards in the full forward line.”

In the opening game of the League, Limerick secured a hard fought draw against Carlow and then followed it up with a highly impressive victory over Antrim. Ryan spoke about the importance of momentum and home advantage ahead of Sundays clash.

“We have them at home which is a plus. That’s going to be huge for us. If we were travelling, we would be kind of doubtful and looking for a performance.”

“But we are going to give everything…And hopefully we can get a result if we can get a result, we go top of the table.”

“Once the momentum builds, you’re ready to go and hopefully on Sunday we can get a result.”

In his first year in the role, Ryan couldn’t be more please with the effort and commitment from his players as they look to continue their impressive form this weekend.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the players, they have given everything. Anything I’ve asked of them in training they’ve responded.”

“There is a plan for the year and we want to take it in stages.”

Throw in between Limerick and Wicklow is at 2pm this Sunday in Askeaton.
