Leger winning prize money to be increased with further additions to card planned on final night

Prize money for the winner of this year’s Irish St Leger, to be held in Limerick Greyhound Stadium next month, will be increased to €30,000.

This follows the establishment of the ‘Friends of Limerick Greyhound Stadium’ group who have spearheaded a funding initiative which is proving very successful. This has enabled an increase in the top prize as well as new competitions of the Leger Cup and Leger Plate.

The Leger Cup applies to the 6 greyhounds who are placed 3rd and 4th in each of the three semi-finals of the competition with a winning prize of €1,500 and a trophy will be ran on the Leger Final card for the first time.

The Leger Plate will include the 6 greyhounds who are placed 5thand 6th in each of the three semi-finals of the competition, with a winning prize of €1,000 and a trophy, will also be contested.

Co-chair of the Friends of Limerick Greyhound Stadium group, Dan Flynn, commented:

“We are hugely thankful to Limerick’s business community and the greyhound fraternity who have pulled together to ensure our support for the Irish St Leger. The Leger Cup and Leger Plate will be very welcome additions to the card on final night and will provide further benefit to the grass roots of the industry. We are already looking forward to the action getting underway on November 2nd.”

Co-chair of the group, Ger Garrihy, added:

“Greyhound racing is a huge Limerick tradition going all the way back to the Markets Field days. We are looking forward to being at the forefront of the Leger, one of the most prestigious events in the Irish greyhound calendar, when it begins at the beginning of next month.”

Irish St Leger entries are being accepted by the Limerick Racing Office until Monday, October 28th at 12 noon.

The Irish St Leger competition will begin on Saturday, November 2nd at Limerick Greyhound Stadium and will run for four consecutive weeks, culminating in the event’s final being held on Saturday, November 23rd.
