Limerick announce the departure of John O’Flynn and Stephen Kenny after two years

Limerick FC have announced that veteran striker John O’Flynn (pictured above) and Stephen Kenny will leave the club following tonight’s match against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght. Both players were instrumental in helping Limerick to the first division title last season with both scoring 16 league goals between them.

A statement released yesterday by Limerick FC confirmed the departures as both players were not being offered new contracts.

“Limerick FC can confirm that forward players John O’Flynn and Stephen Kenny will leave the club, with the decision having been made not to offer the pair new contracts.”

Furthermore, the club thanked the pair for their contribution and commitment to the club during the two year period.

“We wish John and Stephen well in their futures, on and off the field, and put on record our thanks to them for their professionalism and commitment over the past two seasons.”

Also, loanee Joe Crowe will return to Norwich City following his brief three month stint on Shannonside. Crowe made a number of appearances at centre-back for the Super Blues before also featuring in a defensive midfield role. In fact, Crowe earned the man of the match accolade against Drogheda United in the recent 1-0 win from a defensive midfield position. Limerick thanked Norwich for allowing the opportunity to arise and also wished Crowe well in the future.

“Limerick FC thank Norwich for allowing Joe to spend time at the club on-loan since the summer, we thank Joe for his contribution in that period and wish him all the best in the future.”

It is the first squad update from the club during what promises to be a hectic period between now and the new season which is expected to begin in February 2018. Neil McDonald is expected to continue re-shaping his squad following a small mid-season overhaul. Derry City midfielder Barry McNamee has been heavily linked with the club in the past few days. If Limerick are to improve their league standing next season, players of that style will be required by the club.

Firstly, Limerick must concentrate on their final league game of the 2017 Airtricity League season against Shamrock Rovers. The Shannonsiders are two points ahead of both St. Patricks Athletic and Sligo Rovers. Due to their inferior goal difference in comparison with St. Pats, Neil McDonalds men may need all three points to finish in seventh position.
