Limerick complete memorable All-Ireland three-in-a-row against the Cats | On This Day | 2022

The sides meet this Sunday in a repeat of the 2022 decider as Limerick seek a four in a row, something only Kilkenny and Cork have achieved.

Twelve months on from their epic All-Ireland final encounter, Limerick and Kilkenny are just five days out from doing it all again in the 2023 final.

On July 17, 2022, John Kiely’s men just held off the challenge of Kilkenny in an incredible Croke Park contest that ebbed and flowed throughout.

Gearoid Hegarty was the man of the moment, hitting the Cats for 1-5 as Limerick held on for a third successive title for the first time in their history.

The game was barely three-minutes old when Hegarty signalled his intentions, producing an incredible moment to fire past Eoin Murphy and into the net.

But while they dominated the first half, they couldn’t put away the Cats like they did Cork in the previous years’ final.

The Treaty managed to get six ahead on a couple of stages in the opening period but Cody’s men were dogged in their determination as the sides went into the half with just four points separating them.

Kyle Hayes and Aaron Gillane, re established a six-point cushion shortly after the restart but Billy Ryan’s goal on 40 minutes ignited the Kilkenny fire.

Seven minutes later, Martin Keoghan found the net to bring the teams within a point before John Donnellan levelled immediately after.

Limerick pulled ahead once more but eventually Kilkenny drew the sides level through Richie Hogan with just under ten minutes to play.

But in a show of defiance, the champions illustrated why they are one of the best to ever do it with five unanswered putting the game beyond Kilkenny who couldn’t reel them in once more.

And with two points between the sides, Colm Lyons brought an incredible encounter to a close, sparking scenes of joy in GAA HQ with Limerick on top of the hurling landscape once again.

This Sunday, they will do it all again with the nation once more set for an awesome encounter.
