Limerick FC draw Cobh Wanderers in FAI Senior Cup

Limerick FC have been handed a second round tie away to Munster Senior League side Cobh Wanderers in the Irish Daily Mail FAI Senior Cup. The date and time for the tie has yet to be confirmed but will be due to take place on the weekend of August 11.

Limerick have already faced their Munster opponents in the recent past when the sides met at the University of Limerick in a Munster Senior Cup quarter-final in 2016 when the club were under the management of Martin Russell. The Shannonsiders made tough work of the 3-1 victory after extra time and it took a late equaliser from Garbhan Coughlan to bring the game to extra-time.

Limerick FC last won the FAI Senior Cup in 1982 following a 1-0 victory over Bohemians with Brendan Storan scoring the winning goal from a Tony Ward corner. The Super Blues have struggled to compete in the latter stages of the FAI Cup in recent years.

The club have only reached the quarter-final stage of the competition on three occasions in 12 years. In 2017, under the guidance of Neil McDonald, Limerick reached the semi-final stage for the first time in 23 years when they were narrowly defeated 1-0 at the hands of a strong Cork City side two years ago.

It remains to be seen whether Tommy Barrett decides to field a strong team in this year’s competition with such a busy league schedule and the team still vying for a play-off place. With several departures in recent weeks, the former player may decide to prioritise the league in a bid to avoid stretching his squad.
