Crescent College Hockey starlet Anna Horan will move to the University of Connecticut on a scholarship later this year, following in the footsteps of Catholic Institute teammate and Irish star Roisin Upton who made the same move early in her career.
Speaking ahead of the well deserved move to the States, Horan is excited about the prospect.
“I’m delighted I can’t wait.
“I always wanted to go and study abroad in America and I knew the hockey could help me out and be a way to get there but at the back of my head I was like I might as well stay here, hockey is going well in Ireland, I love my club team and everything is going well for me.
“I was very late applying to go there, I didn’t apply until November of 6th year so I started emailing coaches hoping for the best and hoping I wasn’t too late. I made a video highlights package of myself and sent it off with the email, just hedging my bets really. They got back to me and then it was just a case of figuring it out from there.”

As mentioned above, she will be following in the footsteps of Roisin Upton, who described Horan as a “brilliant player and a real talent”.
Horan was quick to praise her teammate who helped her throughout the process.
“She was a great help to me. Definitely at the beginning when I was figuring out the process of the SAT’s and emailing coaches, she was very helpful and any questions I had she would answer for me.”
“If I could do what she is doing I would pretty well off. But I’m just hoping it will help with my career and help me along my path too.”
The teenager also praised her school and club who have helped her to earn the scholarship.
“It’s been massive for me. We have won cups throughout the years. My coaches this year definitely supported me a lot and all coaches with the institute too. They were always helpful and encouraging. The support since I got accepted has been great.”
However, due to the current pandemic, Horan is unsure when she will actually get the chance to represent her new college.
“When I got accepted in March, pre-season was scheduled for August 12, but times have changed since and we don’t really know when it will start now, it will be a bit delayed.”
Nonetheless, it is a very exciting time for Horan and indeed Irish Hockey who will be aiming to impress in next years Olympic Games.
