Limerick Hurdler Sarah Lavin looks Tokyo Bound

Sarah Lavin, Limerick hurdler made a huge statement in her attempts to secure Olympic qualification.

She became only the second Irish Woman to break the 13-second barrier in the 100m Hurdles, following only Derval O’Rourke in doing so.

The 27-year-old from Lisnagry ran in 12.95 seconds at the World Athletics Continental Tour silver meeting in Madrid beating her previous PB by 0.24 seconds. This astonishing achievement puts her in a strong position for a place in the Irish team next month.

The Athlete who is with Emerald AC and coached by Noelle Morrissey had clocked 13.20 in the semi-final before going on to beat her PB in the final and place second. Lavin coming into the event had been placed 43rd in the 100m hurdles, following this impressive time the Limerick athlete will look to place in the top 40 in order to travel to Tokyo, looking like a real possibility following a fine performance.

In other news regarding Irish athletics, a second-place finish was the result of a seasons best time of 1:45.22. in the men’s 800m for Mark English.

The rankings for the Olympic games will be finalised on June 29. This impressive time from Lavin comes following a tough list of injuries in previous years. The Irish woman is now in a very favourable position to finish in the Top 40 of the rankings and progress to the games held in Tokyo.
