Limerick Hurling Team of the Decade: Full Back

The decade that was 2010-2019 is fast coming to an end.

For the Limerick hurlers, it was a mixed decade that started with a protest but would ultimately deliver a first All-Ireland title in 45 years.

Overall, Limerick won one All-Ireland title, Two Munster Championships, a Division 1 League Title and A Division 2 League title.

Over the next fifteen days in the lead up to Christmas, I will select my team of the decade that saw Limerick play 40 championship games and 68 League games.

On Monday we had the No. 1 spot.

Yesterday we brought you the No. 2 Jersey.

Today we look at the Full-Back Position.

Honours: All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, 2x Munster Senior Hurling Championship, Division 1 League Title, Division 2 League Title, All-Star.

McCarthy announced his retirement from the inter-county game last month after a decade long worth of service.

During the decade it can be argued that McCarthy was Limerick’s most impressive performer, making the full-back position his own from 2011-’17 after starting his career in the half-forward line.

Oh Richie McCarthy” became a staple of the terraces whenever McCarthy lined out at number 3 with his old school style proving so effective.

An All-Star in 2013, he was so deserving of the All-Ireland medal he won in 2018.

Rounded off 2019 in style, earning promotion to the senior ranks with Blackrock, helping them earn three promotions over the course of the decade.

A Limerick hurling legend.

Honourable Mentions: Mike Casey

The Na Piarsaigh man has slotted into full-back seamlessly since taking over from McCarthy in 2018.
