Limerick overcome Galway in Salthill despite late Tribesmen flurry

Limerick showed glimpses of their brilliant best in the opening half, finishing double scores clear of their opponents who were lackluster at best

Limerick picked up their second successive win in the National Hurling League with a 0-24 to 0-19 victory over Galway in Salthill today.

The All-Ireland champions were full value for their win but for the third game running, they struggled down the stretch as Galway turned an eight point deficit into a one-point game.

But a late flurry from Limerick was enough to secure the victory as they move onto four points from three outings this Spring.

Limerick showed glimpses of their brilliant best in the opening half, finishing double scores clear of their opponents who were lackluster at best. 0-14 to 0-7 was the deficit at the interval but it could have been more with both sides guilty of wasted opportunities.

It was three scoring spurts that were the difference for the Shannonsiders who were 0-5 to 0-2 ahead after eight minutes with Tom Morrissey, Cian Lynch, Kyle Hayes and Peter Casey all on target from play. Galay reduced the margin to a solitary point but five more unanswered came from Limerick, Micheal Houlihan kickstarting the run in the 12th minute with Morrissey, Lynch, Hayes and Shane O’Brien following suit.

A pair of Conor Cooney frees briefly got Galway within touching distance of the visitors but their answer came from Houlihan (2), Casey and Morrissey in a half where the forwards contributed all of Limerick’s scores.

The second half started at a slower pace than the first with Conor Cooney and Lynch exchanging scores. Sean Linnanne, Cooney and Tom Monaghan reduced the margin to five with 47 on the clock but Limerick hit back with three on the bounce from Morrissey, O’Brien and Seamus Flanagan hitting the target.

A Cooney brace was replied to by a pair by Tom Morrissey who took over the free taking duties after Micheal Houlihan had been replaced. That Morrissey point had Limerick 0-21 to 0-13 in front but from here Galway took over with five successive scores, Cooney bagging four in that span that had Galway withing a goal of their opponents with five to play. Cooney further ate into the lead but that was their final point of the day as Limerick reeled off three in a row to finish.

Morrissey had his third free to end a fifteen minute wait for a score and then fired over from play on the sideline to push Limerick 0-23 to 0-19 in front. Donnacha O’Dalaigh then rounded out the afternoon for Limerick with a brilliant score
