Referees in Limerick have set up a recruitment drive in the county for those looking to getting involved as the man in the middle.
The numbers don’t lie and in Limerick GAA, there has been a 50% drop off in terms of referees since 2012 as outlined by Chairman of the Limerick Referees Association, Donnacha O’Callaghan.
Simply put, without referees, there can be no games and with the ever-increasing number of games in the county, the need for referees at all levels has never been higher.
As such, O’Callaghan and co have set up a recruitment drive in the county for those looking to getting involved as the man in the middle.
The recruitment highlights the positives of getting involved and also how to become a referee with O’Callaghan (0870674984) and Patsy Coffeey (0879160344) reference points for those interested.
Speaking on the Treaty Talk podcast, O’Callaghan was joined by Limerick native and intercounty referee Johnny Murphy as they encouraged those considering getting involved to get in touch.
“Johnny (Murphy) said it, we’re a close family but we are open to going out and meeting people. And some of the best times you’ll have, and the best craic you’ll have is driving to the match with the umpires. There’s a pathway there if you want to get involved.
“I’ve really enjoyed it, it is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made so I would encourage anyone to get involved if possible. If anyone has any questions come to us and we’ll help you out. I don’t think it will be a decision you regret.”
As they said, no referee, no game.
