Limerick suffer narrow defeat to Cork in U20 Hurling Championship

Late points from Adam O’Sullivan and sharp-shooter Barry Walsh secured a crucial win for Cork in the Munster U20 Hurling Championship, keeping their qualification hopes alive. Despite a strong second-half fightback, Limerick suffered their first defeat of the campaign.

This fourth round clash was pivotal, and with Tipperary winning at home to Waterford, the Premier County have assured themselves of a spot in the Munster final. Cork, Clare and Limerick will be fighting for a semi-final spot – the Rebels now favourites to finish second.

With both teams now holding identical records—one win, one draw, and one loss—the upcoming round will be decisive. Cork will progress with a home win over Waterford next Wednesday, while Limerick must beat Clare to stay in contention.

Tipperary’s victory over Waterford ensures their place in the Munster final as group winners.

Walsh was flawless from placed balls, while a first-half goal from Timmy Wilk—capped off by Ben Walsh’s well-timed assist—gave Cork the edge. That goal came during a dominant spell where Cork scored 1-3 without reply, leaving Limerick chasing the game.

The home side had made an electric start, with Donal Coughlan finding the net inside 25 seconds. But by half-time, Cork had wrestled control, leading 1-13 to 1-8, thanks to scores from Walsh, Wilk, and Barry O’Flynn.

Limerick, managed by Evan Loftus, responded well in the second half. Key performances from Fintan Fitzgerald and Mark O’Brien helped them close the gap, and by the 54th minute, Robert O’Farrell’s third point brought them level.

However, missed chances proved costly. Limerick hit two late wides, squandering the opportunity to earn a second draw. Cork, by contrast, kept their composure. A sideline cut from Wilk, followed by scores from O’Sullivan and a long-range Walsh free, sealed the win.

Limerick’s clash with Clare now becomes a do-or-die battle. Meanwhile, Cork will be favourites against already-eliminated Waterford as they aim to claim one of the top three spots and extend their championship journey.
