Limerick swimmer Eoin Corby swam yesterday for qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and recorded a personal best of 59.99.
The 19 year old Clarina native and graduate of Salesian Secondary school Pallaskenry, began his competitive swimming career in Swim Ireland’s Performance Programme at the Limerick National Centre, situated at the University of Limerick.
Despite his young age, Corby’s journey to Olympic consideration is a conventional one. Back in 2018, just before Corby turned 16, he took home two gold medals for 50m and 100m breaststroke as well as one silver for 200m breaststroke at the Euro Meet 2018 in Luxembourg.
The year before, Corby qualified and subsequently competed at the European Youth Olympics in Hungary, where he competed against other swimmers that were a year or more older.
Corby’s work ethic and discipline is one to marvel at. In an interview with Swim Munster in 2018, Corby revealed his grueling training schedule to prepare for Euro Meet 2018, long before he began his olympic preparations.
On average I do nine pool sessions per week and three gym sessions. This is 17 hours pool and 3 hours gym. A lot of 5 am mornings and a dash to the pool straight from school in the evening.
Corby told Swim Munster
Although Corby missed out on qualifying by just 0.06 seconds, he will get another chance to secure his ticket to Tokyo this coming Saturday (June 26th) in the 200m breaststroke in the National Team Trials in Dublin.
