GAA
The trip included representatives of all four codes: Football, Hurling, Camogie and Ladies Football.
Last November over 50 intercounty GAA players travelled to Kenya for the Plant the Planet games. The brainchild of Alan Kerins, the GPA teamed up with Warriors For Humanity and Self Help Africa to highlight the impact of climate change and raise sufficient funds to plant one million trees in Africa.
Limerick trio Sean Finn, Tom Morrissey and Cathy Mee were amongst the travelling party and took to the field for a challenge match at Nairobi Rugby Club, the first time an Inter-County game was played in Kenya. The game included players from all four codes with the All-Ireland winning duo on opposing teams.
The funds raised from the trip will go to Self Help Africa to support the planting of trees, essential not only to combating the increasing impact of climate change but also as a way of providing sustainable income for local communities.
And this Sunday, TG4 will broadcast a documentary chronicling the journey with the programme airing at 5.30pm.
Four-time All-Star Sean Finn spoke at his delight of partaking prior to the event as he said,
“All in all we’re in a privileged position as inter-county players, and with that comes responsibility and influence so it’s something that I’m passionate about and it’s an opportunity for me to use my position to leave my legacy in Kenya by planting a million trees and providing food and water to those affected by climate change.”
The documentary airs on Sunday evening at 5.30pm on TG4.
