Limerick’s Becky Lynch becomes undisputed women’s champion at Wrestlemania

Last night, Limerick born Becky Lynch capped a stellar year when she became the first women to hold both the Smackdown and Raw women’s championships simultaneously at Wrestlemania.

In a historic match at the World Wrestling Entertainment’s flagship event, Lynch joined former UFC champion and Charlotte Flair, son of wrestling legend Ric as the first females to main event at Wrestlemania in its 35 year existence.

Lynch pinned the then Raw champions Rousey, who was undefeated since her debut a year prior, to earn both championships in a winner takes all bout with Flair the Smackdown champion entering the event.

Lynch, who has been with the company since 2015, rose to prominence in wrestling circles with her debut in NxT in 2013, the organisations developmental brand.

She was promoted to the main roster in 2015 with the WWE attempting to usher in a women’s revolution, with Lynch one of its main advocates.

Her popularity spiked late last year as she began to call herself “The Man”, with her no nonsense trash talking resonating with the crowd.

In January, she earned the opportunity to face Rousey at Wrestlemania.

In the aftermath, a clearly emotional Lynch, whose real name is Rebecca Quin spoke about her accomplishment.
