Limerick’s Ryan Spelman earns silver medal in U23 World Rowing Championship

Limerick rower Ryan Spelman won a silver medal after his Coxed men’s four crew placed second in the World Rowing U23 Championships.

The St Michael’s Rowing Club man helped his crew beat off competition from Nederlands, France and USA only to finish in second to Italy.

The championships which were held in the Czech Republic, Spelman alongside his teammates Finn O’Reilly, Andrew Sheehan, Adam Murphy and Leah O’Regan finished with a time of 06:12.84 to take home a silver medal.

Spelman who studies at UL put in an impressive display throughout the weekend 7th-11th of July, the Limerick native was one of 12 athletes chosen among four crews.

Rowing Ireland’s Chief Executive Officer, Michelle Carpenter said,

“I want to congratulate our pathways athletes and team on their fantastic results this weekend. We are thrilled to see the crews perform to such a high standard and take two silver Medals back to Ireland.”

Elsewhere, UL Student and Castleconnell Boat Club member Rory O’Neill just missed out on a medal.

Eoin Gaffney and O’Neill raced in the LM2x A Final in the final race of the day for Irish Crews. Eoin and Rory finished fourth behind crews from German, France and Belgium. They beat the boats from Poland and Switzerland to secure the fourth-place finish. Eoin and Rory finished with a time of 06:29.91.
