The Irish Women’s Hockey side face into a historic World Cup Final on Sunday afternoon following a fairytale tournament in which the 16th ranked side has made it all the way to the last game.
David Passmore was the former IHA high performance director, mens coach and is the current U21 women’s coach and as a consequence has been through some of the leaner years of the sport.
Passmore says Ireland’s achievements thus far have been far beyond their wildest expectations.
“They are a really strong group and they have invested everything into this tournament and yet they have come and enjoyed it and taken it each game at a time. I am surprised we are in a final, but there is no more deserving team.”
Limerick’s Roisin Upton has been a key part of the side during the competition and Passmore says her hard work and dedication over some difficult spells as finally paid off.
“Roisin has played fantastically well… she is a resilient thing, always has been, just really tough, has the ability to play with intensity yet a calmness in her head so she doesn’t do rash things. That’s really stood her in good stead here and the fact that she has gotten through so many injuries in the past few years, it’s fantastic to see her out there performing.”
