Limerick FC right-back Shaun Kelly says the whole squad are looking forward to getting on to the pitch on Monday night for the playoff following a difficult season for everybody.
Kelly was part of the 2015 Limerick team who went on an incredible run to reach the playoffs only to lose 2-0 against Finn Harps at Monday night’s venue. Kelly is hoping that the players who weren’t involved that night are ready for the challenge. “Obviously it’s still going to be in the back of our minds (the loss in 2015) but I think it was only me, Duggie (Shane Duggan) and Trace (Shane Tracy) that were there that night. We are old enough and big enough now to know what to expect and we are trying to re-lay that message to the boys. Once you get out on to that pitch its a different story especially in the first 15 minutes when the crowd get on your back.”
Limerick are entering the two legged affair in poor form with four heavy defeats in a row and just one goal scored in that time frame. Kelly realises that it will be difficult for the team to “switch it on” for the game but also feels the playoffs are like cup football and form doesn’t come into it. “You want to be able to switch it on but sometimes it just doesn’t happen that way. Cup finals are a bit different and this is a cup final for us so I think form goes out the window. They will be flying come into this game but we have a young bunch and it doesn’t seem to phase them and they just keep getting on with it.”
