A TOTAL of seven point-to-point race meetings have been announced for the mid-west region in 2018, commencing with Askeaton on Sunday next (1pm).
‘Stonehall Harriers,’ who run this meeting, have located a new track this time around and its ideally located on the Hanley farm at Moig South, just a short gallop from the N69 bypass of the town.
Six attractive races have been put in place, with bar/dining facilities on site, while children will be admitted free. There is plenty of vantage points from which to view the action.
A top quality entry has been received, with the leading trainers and owners all represented. In-form jockeys JJ Codd and Derek O’Connor are pencilled-in for action at Askeaton.
The following Sunday, Co. Limerick Hunt will stage its point-to-point at Cragmore (Askeaton). Other local meetings will be held at Killaloe on February 25, Lemonfield (Crecora) on March 4, Kilmallock on April 8, Ballysteen on April 22 and Rathcannon (Athlacca) in early May.
Point-to-point meetings are where the future stars of the National Hunt scene are unearthed, many of whom have emerged as the headline makers at Cheltenham each March.
Tommy Kelly from the point to point organising committee says that race goers are in for a good day of quality racing.
