Mary I's big win over LIT sees them earn Fitzgibbon Cup quarter final spot

Mary Immaculate College came out victorious on a comfortable 4-24 to 1-19 scoreline over LIT and in doing so booked their place in the 2020 Fitzgibbon Cup quarter final.

A win over WIT on Thursday will book a home fixture in the last eight for a Mary I side that were too strong for LIT from the off.

Clare forward Gary Cooney top scored with 2-3 for Mary I, while Cork duo Tim O’Mahony and Phillip Wall also hit the back of the net.

LIT’s cause wasn’t helped in the first half after both Conor McCarthy and Barry McDonagh were sent off.

Cooney and O’Mahony had already scored two goals for a Mary I side that led 2-13 to 0-7 at half time.

Mary I dropped the pace in the second half, but still ran out comfortable winners by 14 points.

Following the win, Jamie Wall spoke about the performance of his Mary I side and looked ahead to Thursday’s vital clash with WIT.

Elsewhere, UL kept their hopes of reaching the quarter final received a boost after a 3-21 to 0-13 win over Trinity College.

Having lost their opening game against DCU, UL needed to beat Trinity to have any hope of progressing.

Gary Kirby’s side had Cian Darcy in fine form for the second game running. The Tipperary notched up 2-6 to follow up on his 0-15 from the DCU game.

Limerick’s Kyle Hayes created the first goal for Darcy and added a goal of his own in the one sided win.
