“More work to do, but they have a chance” | John Kiely provides update on Lynch and Casey after returns from injury

Limerick secured their place in the 2022 All-Ireland hurling final with a hard fought win over Galway on Sunday.

It was a case of job done for John Kiely and co on Sunday afternoon as they resisted everything that Galway threw at them for a 0-27 to 1-21 win in the All-Ireland semi-final.

Last four ties are there to be won and that’s exactly what Limerick did as a huge impact off the bench was enough to help them see off the Tribesmen.

David Reidy was exceptional on his introduction into the midfield, slotting over three points at a crucial stage in the game. Conor Boylan also made his presence known after replacing Seamus Flanagan.

However, it was the introductions of Peter Casey and Cian Lynch that garnered the biggest response from the crowd as the All-Star duo made their return from injuries.

Casey last featured for Limerick in the 2021 All-Ireland final in August where he ruptured his ACL while Lynch has been out of action since the second round win over Waterford in April.

Reflecting on their return to action, John Kiely praised their impact but acknowledges there is work to be done ahead of Kilkenny in the decider.

“It was great to get them back on the field. it was great to be able to name them on the 26. They have worked very, very hard, as have others like Barry Murphy who was unlucky to miss out. He put in a huge shift over the same time period as Peter.

“But you could see that they still had more work to do, but they have a chance now, they have a chance. As I said earlier, there were vital pieces they gave us in terms of assists, possession, tackles and all those bits and pieces. They were valuable to us in the period they were on the field.

“I’ve no doubt that it will do their inner belief the world of good that they are over those injuries. Cian sprinting down the line after Tom Monaghan. knowing you can do these things that you’ve been asked to do and prepared to do. It gives them real confidence that they are over their injuries and they can press on.”
