Mungret St Pauls dethrone Doon to reach Limerick Premier U21 Hurling Final

The City side await the winners of tonight’s other semi-final as Ahane take on Ballybrown in Mick Neville Park.

Mungret St Pauls booked their place in the Limerick Premier U21 Hurling Championship final after a convincing 2-11 to 0-11 win over Doon on Monday evening.

The City side dominated the second period in difficult conditions in Mick Neville Park to dethrone the champions who were looking for four on the bounce.

The game turned just after the restart with Mungret bagging a pair of goals back to back to take the contest away from Doon.

Mungret St Pauls will have Ahane or Ballybrown for company in Sunday’s final as they meet on Tuesday evening in the other semi-final.

All-Ireland winner Adam English had Doon off the mark from a free with the East side having the slight aid of a swirling breeze in the opening half. Premier U17 winning captain Fintan Fitzgerald replied for Mungret before English hit a pair of frees.

Four on the bounce, three coming from Liam Lynch put Mungret two ahead with 18 on the clock. Doon hit back but captain Brian O’Meara extended the margin with the score of the half. But scores from Kevin Maher and English had the sides level at the break.

The crucial scores came shortly after the restart with Cian Moloney and Cillian O’Gorman both finding the net. Moloney saw his long range effort fall short onto the stick of the Doon goalkeeper but conditions played their part as the sliotar skidded into the net.

From the next attack, O’Gorman was set free by Lynch and he made no mistake in pushing his side 2-6 to 0-6 ahead.

English replied with a pair of frees but Lynch, O’Meara and O’Halloran had the answers as they edged seven points clear with twenty to play.

Scores from Donal Coughlan and Eddie Stokes reduced the deficit marginally but Mungret had the final score of the evening with Fitzgerald capping a fine individual performance.

Ahane and Ballybrown meet on Tuesday evening in Mick Neville Park in the other semi-final. Ballybrown come into the game with a perfect record having beat Mungret, Patrickswell and Na Piarsaigh en route to the last four. Ahane received a walkover in their first outing before falling to Doon. A comfortable win over Garryspillane was enough to book their last four spot.
