Munster confirm signing of South African Jenkins and a host of new contracts

Munster Rugby have confirmed the signing of South African Jason Jenkins as well as a number of contract extensions for the 2021/22 season.

Jenkins arrives from Toyota Verblitz in the Japanese Top League. He represented his home club the Bulls over four years, lining out with current Munster player RG Snyman, and is widely recognised for his strong ball-carrying abilities.

The 25-year-old made his Springbok debut in 2018 in Rassie Erasmus’ first game in charge.

He is equally adept in the second or back row and will help to fill the void in CJ Stander’s and Billy Holland’s departures.

He joins on a one-year deal.

Speaking ahead of Jenkin’s arrival, Johaan van Graan said,

“We’ve had to manage CJ’s recent news and look at what’s needed across our back row next season with Billy who provides cover there also retiring at the end of June.

“I’ve seen Jason’s progression through the South African ranks and while he was highly sought after, I am delighted he will be joining us this summer as I know he will make a great addition to the squad.

“Everyone is aware of the level of players we’re losing from the pack and Jason brings the required level of professionalism, physicality, and athleticism that we can draw on as he competes for his place next season.”

Elsewhere, Fineen Wycherley and Diarmuid Barron have signed contract extensions with the province. Wycherley’s signs a two year extension after being called up to the wider Irish squad last Autumn while Hooker Barron penned a one year extension.

There are four players who will be promoted from the Academy to the Senior set up for the upcoming season.

The trio of Jack Daly, Josh Wycherley and Thomas Ahern all progress from their final year while Jack Crowley will advance after one year in the programme.

All four have made their debts for the province during the 2020/21 campaign.
