There are several competitions taking place in Limerick this weekend with the Munster Junior Cup clash between Janesboro and Aisling Annacotty grabbing the attention, The game will take place at Pearse Stadium (10.30). Last year’s beaten finalists Janesboro will be looking to build on a crushing win over Charleville last weekend. The Munster Junior Cup will be a big target for the Southside club after their early exit in the FAI Junior Cup.
Despite early, criticism, Shane O’Hanlon and Aidan Ryan’s side are currently in second place and just one point behind Pike Rovers. Aisling Annacotty have enjoyed a solid season with four wins from nine games and sit in sixth position so will be looking to make things difficult for their hosts.
The Touhy Cup first round games begin on Sunday morning with two matches taking place. Regional Utd host Geraldines in Dooradoyle and the astroturf pitch has been turned into a fortress for Regional this season. The club had a whopping 10-2 victory over Nenagh last week. Regional have enjoyed two victories over league champions Janesboro and are currently fourth in the premier division. However, Geraldines have enjoyed a solid return to the top flight and only six points separate the teams in the league standings.
Ballynanty will be looking to bounce back from their first dropped points of the season on Sunday when they face a dangerous Fairview team. Jason Purcell’s side have lost just one league game this season but too many draws means they are 11 points adrift of top spot even at this early stage. Although the league is almost certainly beyond them, the Fairgreen outfit will be targeting local cup competitions with plenty of quality among their ranks. AJ O’Connor has been in superb form in midfield as he scored two more goals in their 9-3 demolition of Caherconlish.
In the PJ Matthews Premier League, struggling Carew Park make the trip to Nenagh. Carew Park were unable to field a team against Geraldines last week in what is a tough time for the former league champions. Many old players as well as minor players have had to pull together to put out an unknown team every week. Unfortunately, between cricket scores in games and walkovers, it’s been a poor start to the 2018/2019 premier division as a whole. Hopefully, the four way battle for the league title will draw positives for the division.
The Oscar Traynor Youths begin the weekend’s fixture list with a game against Galway at Jackman Park on Friday night in the FAI Inter League Trophy (7pm).
