After a year delay due to the Covid outbreak, the Munster School’s Senior and Junior Cups return today.
In the Senior Cup, the main attraction will be the Limerick derby between Ardscoil Rí and Castletroy on the North Circular Road today. Ardscoil Rís have more recent pedigree in the competition, reaching back to back finals in 2014 and 2015 where they were beaten both times as they await a first ever triumph. The Castletroy outfit have only reached one final ever but were victorious when upsetting the odds against CBC in 2008.
Perennial Munster Senior Cup winners Crescent Comp will seek their 12th victory in the competition as they take on the Munster Club Select Player (CSP) side. The Munster CSP side is an amalgamation side made up of club players around Munster. Munster CSP are unable to win the Munster Schools Senior Cup and the side’s interest in the competition will end after the group stages.
Rockwell College are in the hunt for their first senior cup since 2015, having not been to a final since that win. They will host Limerick school St. Munchin’s in the season opener, with Munchin’s having not been to a final since losing to today’s opponents in 2012.
Bandon Grammar will host schools giant P.B.C in the season opener, P.B.C are on the hunt for their 31st Schools Cup while Bandon seek their first win ever in the competition.
The Junior Cup also kicks off today with Ardscoil and Castletroy meeting in that competition also.
