Newcastle West Town have taken to social media to congratulate Jay McGrath on his call-up to the Ireland U19’s training camp.
Young McGrath is the son of former Ireland U21 international John McGrath who played his schoolboy football with Corbally United and Templeglantine before joining Noel O’Reilly’s Belvedere.
The Limerick father and son made headlines in 2019 when they appeared alongside eachother in an FA Cup clash for non-league outfit Mickleover.
John McGrath remains as player-manager of the club but his son Jay has moved to English Championship side Coventry City and has high hopes for the future.
The Ireland U19s came together last week for a two day camp to look at 35 underage players who have previously went under the radar. Among the group were Joshua Ireland (son of Stephen) and former Barcelona and Liverpool wonderkid Zak Gilsenan.
Former Ireland striker Jonathan Walters joined Tom Mohan’s coaching team to run the rule over the youngsters and all at Newcastle West Town FC will be hoping young McGrath did enough to earn future call-ups.
