O’Donnell Double gives Rathkeale Perfect Start

Premier Division League Cup
Rathkeale’s narrow win over Ballingarry gave them the perfect start to Weekly Observer Premier Division Cup Group B. A brace of Eoin O’Donnell goals in the second half saw them come from behind. Ballingarry skipper Dean Clancy had headed his side in front on 40 minutes.

Thomas Quilligan could have sealed the win sooner, but saw his late penalty saved by Craig McInness. Ballingarry have a bye next weekend while Rathkeale travel to Glin Rovers.

The other week one game in this group, which sees Glin Rovers travel to Kilcornan, is moved to Tuesday 30th, at 6.30pm. Creeves Celtic are the fifth side and make their seasonal bow next weekend away to Kilcornan.

Meanwhile in Group A, there was only one game played. That was the meeting of Division One Champions Breska Rovers and Desmond Cup finalists, Newcastle West Town in Clarina. After an even enough opening quarter, Newcastle West struck the front through Dylan Singh when he rifled to the corner after a mix-up in the Breska Rovers defence.

The hosts equalised through Darragh O’Sullivan on 35 minutes, the midfielder heading home from a corner. The introduction of veteran striker Keith McNicholas at half time and he immediately went about firing the net. He spun inside the area and fired low beyond the keeper. His son Cian was also on target for Mungret Regional on Sunday morning in the Limerick District Premier League.

Breska’s goal lived a charmed life late on and James Purcell made a few great saves as well as a free kick bouncing off the post. However, Singh eventually pounced for his second inside the last five minutes inside a packed penalty area. Newcastle West won the tiebreaker shootout, 4-1.

The other tie in this group saw Broadford United receive a walkover from Granagh United who face Breska Rovers next weekend. Broadford must wait another week for some on-field action, while Newcastle West Town host Abbeyfeale United in a tasty looking match-up, which is a repeat of the 2022 Desmond Cup final.

Division One League Cup
Athea United were the big winners in group A, seeing off Shountrade 4-0. The other side promoted from Division Two, Askeaton, were 4-2 winners. Both sides winning on the road.

In group B, Dromore United won 3-0 away to Shannonside while Rathkeale B stopped a clean sweep of away wins, drawing 3-3 with Newcastle West Town Reserves. The Magpies won the shootout, 3-0.

Division Two League Cup

Group A saw Abbeyfeale United B receive a walkover from Knockaderry, while Glin Rovers B had a bye. Glin host Abbeyfeale next weekend.

In Group B, promoted Ballingarry B were 6-2 winners away to Glantine under lights on Saturday evening, while Mountcollins had a bye. The Division Three Champions, Mountcollins, host Glatine next Sunday on their return to this Division. Division Three League Cup

Group A saw Dromore United’s B team defeat Carrig Celtic, 4-0, in Kildimo while newly formed Broadford United B won away to Shannonside’s second-string, 2-1.
