On this day twelve months ago, Mary Immaculate College knocked rivals UL out of the Fitzgibbon Cup courtesy of a 2-21 to 1-21 win in extra-time in the quarter-final.
In their first meeting in the competition since the 2016 final where Mary I grabbed their maiden title, the visitors UL started the brightest with Shane Golden netting early on.
However, a pair of Mary I goals from Gary Cooney and Shane Ormond pulled them back into the contest as they found the lead late on in the first period.
At the half Mary I were 2-10 to 1-9 to the good.
They would maintain that lead until near the end but were let down by poor discipline with three Cian Darcy frees bringing the game to extra time.
Darcy continued this form into extra time with a couple of more frees bringing his personal tally to 0-15 as UL took a two point lead into the interval.
However, Mary I would rally and five successve scores would seal the win and their place in the last four of the competition.
They would lose out comprehensively to IT Carlow in the quarter-final with UCC going on to reclaim their title.
Jason Gillane was Mary I’s netminder throughout the competition with the Patrickswell man going on to win a first All-Ireland medal later that year.
UL were hampered in the quarter-final clash as Kyle Hayes missed out with an ankle injury. Na Piarsaigh’s Ronan Lynch was the only Limerick man to start for the Castletroy outfit.
