On This Day: Limerick lose League opener to Tipp as Na Piarsaigh advance to first All-Ireland final

Five years ago, Na Piarsaigh moved into the All-Ireland final at the third time of asking as they beat Oulart-The Ballagh after extra time in a thrilling encounter.

In 2010 on the same day, the Limerick footballers would lose their National League opener away to Tipperary.

2016

Na Piarsaigh book their place in a maiden All-Ireland final with a 1-22 to 0-20 win over Oulart-The Ballagh after extra-time in Thurles.

The Wexford champions moved into an early 0-4 to 0-1 lead but were pegged back with the Limerick side level after 15 minutes.

Na Piarsaigh would take the lead for the first time shortly after before Oulart regained their advantage with two on the bounce.

The Wexford side held a one point advantage approaching half-time before David Breen grabbed the games only goal to give them a two point cushion at the break.

On resumption, Nap had the first three scores of the half to push into a five point lead.

The lead was four with ten minutes to play but Na Piarsaigh would not score again as three Nicky Kirwan frees forced the game into extra-time.

Na Piarsaigh dominated the first period of extra-time and outscored their opponents 0-4 to 0-1 to take a three point lead into the second period.

Alan Dempsey pushed this lead out to four and while Oulart responded with a score, the Limerick men were able to keep their opponents at arms length to book their place in the March 17 final against Ruairi Óg Cushendall.

Maurice Horan’s first game in charge in Limerick would end in defeat as Tipperary were 0-10 to 0-6 victors in Semple Stadium

With the aid of the breeze, Limerick were 0-3 to 0-1 to the good at the break with the hosts very wasteful in front of goal. Incredibly, they had just one score from 14 shots with nine wides.

Nonetheless, they would regroup in the second for a far more polished performance with their superior scoring threat ultimately paying dividends as they outscored the Shannonsiders 0-9 to 0-3 in the second period.

Limerick were heavily reliant on Ger Collins who finished with all but one of their scores with John Galvin grabbing the other.

The four point defeat would prove costly at the conclusion of the campaign as Limerick were relegated by goal differential after finishing level on points with Tipp.
