On This Day: Mixed results for Limerick in 2018 League double

On this day three years ago, both the Limerick hurlers and footballers were in National League action. John Kiely’s side were 1-24 to 0-10 winners over Offaly while Billy Lee’s team lost out 2-11 to 0-13 against Carlow.

The Limerick hurlers moved to the top of the Division 1B table after defeating Offaly 1-24 to 0-10 in O’Moore Park in the second round of the League.

Limerick led by a point midway through the first half when the Leinster side were awarded a penalty. That effort would sail wide and from here the Shannonsiders would dominate proceedings.

Their advantage at the break was 0-12 to 0-7.

The beginning of the second half followed the ending of the first as Limerick grabbed five of the first seven scores.

Aaron Gillane’s goal on the 45 minute mark put the game to bed with Limerick going on to win each of their five league games to secure promotion.

After a disappointing round one loss, Billy Lee’s Limerick footballers were once again on the wrong side of the result as they fell to Carlow 2-11 to 0-13 in Newcastle West.

The Treaty men would take an early lead which was wiped out by a soft Paul Broderick goal after his shot for a point dropped into the Limerick net.

Lee’s side rallied and had the deficit to just a point approaching the half. But the Leinster men would hit a purple patch prior to the break and took a healthy 1-7 to 0-6 lead into the break.

Carlow killed off the game shortly after the restart with their second goal which came courtesy of John Murphy as he tucked past Donal O’Sullivan after the Limerick keeper saved his penalty.

Carlow would kick on and moved into a 2-11 to 0-9 lead. However, Limerick showed their resilience to kick the final four scores of the day in a losing effort.
