On This Day: The Limerick Footballers record league victories six years apart

February 9

On This Day last year Limerick came back from the dead to beat Carlow in the National Football League and were also victorious on the same day against Longford six years earlier.

2020

Limerick made it three from three in the National Football League with a smash and grab 1-7 to 0-9 win over Carlow in Newatch Dr Cullen Park.

The home side had the first four scores of the game as they built an early lead.

But a pair of Adrian Enright scores either side of Cillian Fahy and Bob Childs efforts saw the sides go into the break level.

Jamie Lee had the first score of the second half and another from Danny Neville had Limerick two clear.

However, five on the trot for Carlow gave them a three point advantage heading into injury time.

A late Bob Childs goal gave Limerick hope before Iain Corbett tapped over a penalty to ensure the win for the Shannonsiders.

2014

Limerick grabbed their first League win of the year with a 2-11 to 0-11 victory over Longford in the Gaelic Grounds.

John Brudair’s side hit the ground running and were 0-4 to 0-1 clear inside the opening 10 minutes.

They continued in this vein and with Ian Ryan leading the scoring charge, Limerick held a 0-9 to 0-3 advantage at the short whistle.

The Leinster men had the first three scores of the second half before Ger Collins bagged Limerick’s first goal of the game after 48 minutes.

Collins was fouled in the penalty area nine minutes later with Seanie Buckley converting the penalty to put the game beyond Longford.

Limerick would repeat the trick over Longford in the first round of the qualifiers later that year.
