On This Day: Three from three from Limerick in 2016, 2011 and 2010

On this day five years ago, Limerick started their NHL campaign with a win over Wexford, five years after beating Clare in their opener.

In 2010 the footballers had their second consecutive League win with a victory over Carlow.

2016

Limerick started their 2016 National Hurling League campaign with a convincing 2-23 to 0-15 win over Wexford in the Gaelic Grounds.

Limerick were in imperious form in the opening half as they raced into a 0-16 to 0-4 lead against the Leinster side.

Midfielder Paul Browne was electric form with four points from play in the first half.

Wexford rallied with seven of the first eight scores after the restart before Graeme Mulcahy put the bed with the games first goal on 50 minutes.

Declan Hannon had Limerick’s second late on as he brought his personal total to 1-4.

Each of Limerick’s forwards would get on the scoresheet including the midfield pairing of Browne and John Fitzgibbon as Diarmaid Byrnes also added 0-4.

2011

After the debacle that was 2010, Limerick regrouped under new manager Donal O’Gardy to secure a 2-9 to 0-6 win over Clare in Cusack Park in the National League opener.

In their first game in Division 1B, Limerick were full value for a nine point win with a number of players returning after missing out in 2010.

One of those was Blackrock’s Richie McCarthy as he notched 1-5 in the win. Graeme Mulcahy was on hand to grab the games other goal as one of the survivors from the 2010 team.

Kevin Downes grabbed a debut point and was joined on the scoresheet by James Ryan and Donal O’Grady.

Limerick would go on to win each of their league games that year but missed out on promotion as the structure of the championship was altered for 2012.

2010

Limerick made it two from two in Division 4 of the National League with a 0-11 to 0-7 win over Carlow in the Gaelic Grounds.

Limerick approached the half with a three point lead before the away side were awarded a penalty. Simon Re was unable to convert from the spot as the Shannonsiders maintained that lead into the half.

On the restart, Ian Ryan was on hand to put the game beyond the visitors as he grabbed three scores as Limerick bagged four in a row in total.

In the end the margin of victory was four with Ryan topscoring on the day with a tally 0-6. Cormac Joyce Power added a brace.

Limerick would win six of their eight group games before defeating Waterford to earn promotion to Division 3 for 2011.
