“Our goal every year is to win county” | Newcastle West’s Iain Corbett confident of retaining SFC title against Adare

Newcastle West can make it back-to-back SFC final victories over their final opponents if they get over the line on Sunday.

A sixth Limerick SFC title is on offer for Newcastle West as they prepare to face 2020 champions Adare in the final this weekend.

The holders have stormed through the championship this season, with Jimmy Lee’s men topping group one with an impressive five wins from five before following up with a 1-10 to 0-10 semi-final victory over Monaleen.

However, NCW aren’t the only side in the championship with a perfect record this season with their final opponents Adare matching the side’s impressive feat.

The two teams faced each other for the SFC crown just twelve months ago and NCW’s Iain Corbett recognises the challenge that stands in the way of retaining their title.

“Both teams will know plenty about each other, I suppose from last year and all the previous years. Look, they’re a formidable side they showed yesterday (against Fr. Casey’s) even missing a few players that they have that experience in winning tight games and they’ll be a massive challenge.”

On the note of retaining their title, it’s a feat that Newcastle West are yet to accomplish in their history with Sunday being their fifth attempt to do so.

According to Corbett, this is something that hasn’t been spoken upon in the NCW dressing room with their ambition being to take each round as it comes and ultimately, to lift the title at the end of the year.

“No it wasn’t really mentioned. Our goal every year is to win the county but there’s been no real emphasis been put into back-to-back.

“There’s lads involved this year that it’s their first year involved, so it’ll be their first (final), there’s other lads then and it’ll be their fourth if we get over the line, but no, our focus I suppose was to top the group and the last few weeks, get to the final and now I suppose it’s about winning.”
