Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of Munster legend Anthony ‘Axel’ Foley, one of the most beloved figures in Irish rugby.
RTE’s documentary Anthony Foley: Munsterman which was aired last night managed to perfectly capture the essence of the great man, giving an insight into his many fantastic achievements and the devastation caused by his untimely death.
Director Ross Whitaker along with producers Adrian McCarthy and Limerick man Wesley Liddy have done an astounding job with the documentary drawing on the perspectives of Foley’s family, past team-mates, current players and colleagues in order to gain an insight into Axel – the schoolboy rugby phenom, the Shannon legend, the Heineken Cup winning captain, the head coach and the family man.
As yesterday’s storm subsided, many will have kicked back safely in their sitting rooms to tune into what was a powerful watch to say the least. Understandably, the majority who watched the documentary were moved and expressed their appreciation on social media.
If you haven’t had the chance to watch the film, you can still catch it on RTE Player.

#Axel was beautifully put together. So strange, yesterday while cleaning the young bloods wardrobes the jerseys appeared. What a sign. pic.twitter.com/NnAmJKSodB
